If you’re a fashion startup preparing to launch your first collection, understanding production samples is essential. One of the most common questions I get as a freelance fashion designer in the UK is: “What does a 1st fit sample actually mean?”
This guide breaks down 1st fit samples, what the sample label shows, and the key stages of garment production — from concept to bulk approval.

What Is a 1st Fit Sample?
A 1st fit sample is the very first physical version of your garment made from a factory pattern. Its main purpose is to check:
Overall fit and proportions
Pattern accuracy
Construction methods
Key design details
At this stage, fabrics and trims may not be final. The focus is fit — not perfection.

Understanding a Sample Label
A production sample label (like the one shown) usually includes:
Style Number – internal reference for the garment
Size – the base size used for fitting
Customer – your brand name
Season – e.g. SS27 (Spring Summer 2027)
Sample Stage – 1st Fit, 2nd Fit, Red Seal or PP
Date – when the sample was made
These labels help track progress and avoid confusion between multiple versions.

The Main Stages of Fashion Production Samples
1. 1st Fit Sample
This is where problems are expected. Fit issues, balance, length, sleeve shape and proportion are reviewed. Amendments are sent back to the factory.

2. 2nd Fit Sample
The factory applies your changes. This sample should show improved fit and closer accuracy to your intended design.

3. Red Seal Sample
This is the final approved version of the garment. All measurements, construction and design details are confirmed and signed off.

4. PP Sample (Pre-Production Sample)
Made using final fabrics, trims and labels, the PP sample represents what will go into bulk production. This is the last checkpoint before manufacturing begins.

Why This Process Matters for Startups
Skipping or rushing sample stages often leads to:
Poor fit
Costly bulk production errors
Delays and remakes
Working with an experienced freelance fashion designer ensures your samples are reviewed properly, saving time and money long-term.
