Research & Product Direction
Before starting your collection, understanding your target market is essential. In-depth research is the foundation of the entire design process and plays a vital role in shaping your collection’s success.
The research process allows me to transform an initial concept into a finalized design. Here’s how I can support you:
- Initial Product Direction If you already have a clear idea, whether in the form of photos, sketches, or written notes, I can work with your provided materials to develop your vision. There’s no need for elaborate mood boards; simple, concise direction works just as well.
- Research & Moodboard Creation If you’re starting with a blank slate or need additional inspiration, I can conduct research and create a custom moodboard tailored to your vision. To ensure this aligns with your goals, I’ll need insights into your customer profile or references to brands you’d like to emulate.
- Trend Research & Theme Development I’ll delve into current and upcoming trends relevant to your target market, compiling themes that resonate with your brand’s identity. If you decide on a main theme, I can expand on it with further detailed research, ensuring your collection stays cohesive and innovative.
This collaborative process ensures your designs are informed, market-relevant, and aligned with your brand’s unique identity.

Computer Aided Design(CAD)
In the fashion industry, a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) sketch—also known as a flat sketch or technical flat—is a precise, technical drawing of a garment shown laid flat to highlight all design details. Created using professional design software like Adobe Illustrator, these sketches are an essential part of the design process.
A technical sketch is included in the Tech Pack, serving as a vital tool to communicate the design, construction, and stitch details of your garment to the factory. This ensures accuracy and consistency in production, bringing your vision to life seamlessly.

Tech Packs
Once your CAD design is complete, the next step is to create a Tech Pack—an essential document that you send to your chosen factory to produce your garments. A fashion Tech Pack acts as a blueprint, providing the factory with detailed instructions on how to construct, assemble, and finish your designs accurately.
The Tech Pack includes all the critical information needed to create a sample and proceed to full production. Key elements typically include:
- Technical Drawings: Clear illustrations showing the garment’s design and details.
- Fabric Composition: Specifications for materials and their properties.
- Pantone Colors: Precise color references to maintain consistency.
- Construction Details: Instructions for assembly, stitching, and finishing.
- Reference Images: Visual aids to further explain garment features.
A well-prepared Tech Pack minimizes miscommunication between all parties involved, saving time and money while improving efficiency throughout the production process.

Full Graded Size Specifications
In my experience, the most efficient approach is to provide grading specifications as a separate document, which aligns with how most brands and suppliers operate.
Grading specifications, or grading specs, outline the Points of Measure (POM) for each garment. These measurements indicate how each size should change—whether increasing or decreasing—to create a full size range. Grading specs are typically created in Excel and can be tailored to any size ratio, such as XS-XL or sizes 6-20.
Basic Points of Measurement Grading specs usually include the following standard POMs:
- Full garment length
- Chest
- Waist
- Hip
- Sleeve length
- Neck width
- Front neck drop
- Across shoulder
Additional POMs for Complex Garments For more intricate designs, additional POMs are necessary. For example, a button-up shirt may require measurements for:
- Collar stand width and length
- Collar width and length
- Button placket length and width
These detailed specifications ensure accuracy and consistency across all sizes, making them an essential component of the production process.
